Polar ice melt accelerates (+video)

The Earth's ice sheets are melting three times faster than they were two decades ago, 47 researchers say in a recently published study. The scientists fault human-created global warming for the dramatic increase in melting.

By Seth Borenstein,?Associated Press / November 29, 2012

Fueled by global warming,?polar?ice?sheets in Greenland and Antarctica are now melting three times faster than they did in the 1990s, a new scientific study says.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

So far, that's only added about half an inch (1.3 centimeters) to rising sea levels, not as bad as some earlier worst case scenarios. But the melting's quicker pace, especially in Greenland, has?ice?scientists worried.

One of the biggest wild cards in climate change has been figuring out how much the melting of the massive sheets of?ice?at the two poles would add to the seas. Until now, researchers haven't agreed on how fast the mile-thick sheets are thawing ? and if Antarctica was even losing?ice.

The new research concludes that Antarctica is melting, but points to the smaller?ice?sheet in Greenland, which covers most of the island, as the bigger and more pressing issue. Its melt rate has grown from about 55 billion tons a year in the 1990s to almost 290 billion tons a year recently, according to the study.

"Greenland is really taking off," said National Snow and?Ice?Data Center scientist Ted Scambos, a co-author of the paper released Thursday by the journal Science.

Study lead author Andrew Shepherd of the University of Leeds in England, said their results provide a message for negotiators in Doha, Qatar, who are working on an international agreement to fight global warming: "It's very clear now that Greenland is a problem."

Scientists blame man-made global warming for the melting. Burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, emits carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that trap heat, warming the atmosphere and oceans. Bit-by-bit, that erodes the?ice?sheets from above and below. Snowfall replenishes the?ice?sheets, but hasn't kept pace with the rate of melting.

Because the world's oceans are so big, it takes a lot of?ice?melting ? about 10 trillion tons ? to raise sea levels 1 inch (2.5 centimeters). Since 1992,?ice?sheets at the poles have lost nearly 5 trillion tons of?ice, the study says, raising sea levels by about a half inch.

That seemingly tiny extra bit probably worsened the flooding from an already devastating Superstorm Sandy last month, said NASA?ice?scientist Erik Ivins, another co-author of the study. He said the extra weight gives each wave a little more energy.

Let the debate end: Grammy noms anybody's guess

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? It's a brutal year to be in the Grammy nominations handicapping game.

Sure, there are a few safe bets. Mumford & Sons and Frank Ocean are expected to take a share of nominations when they're announced Wednesday night on national television during "The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!" in Nashville.

And popular songs by Gotye, fun., Taylor Swift and Carly Rae Jepsen may land those artists on the list as well, though Jepsen harbors some doubt her omnipresent song "Call Me Maybe" will net a nod.

"I would be so shocked," the 27-year-old singer said last week. "But this year has taught me to look forward to surprises and just be ready for anything. So, cross your fingers for me."

Viral songs like Jepsen's seemed to be the theme of the year, and with no watershed albums during the nominating period for the 2013 Grammys like Adele's "21" or Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," it's not clear who will turn out as this year's top nominee.

Thus the guessing game.

The Grammy nominations period ended Sept. 30 and three of the year's top four debuting albums ? from Swift, One Direction and Jason Aldean ? came after that date. Rihanna also released a new album after the period ended. All could have songs nominated, but a popular album is the quickest way to accumulate multiple nods.

Mumford & Sons slipped in just under the deadline. Introduced to much of their burgeoning fan base through a 2011 appearance on the Grammys, the British folk-rock band could return with a flourish after selling 600,000 copies of "Babel" in the first week of release and setting streaming records on Spotify.

And Ocean showed the kind of bravery that might be rewarded by The Recording Academy's voters when he announced in liner notes for his album "channel ORANGE" that he'd had a same-sex encounter, causing an industry-wide discussion of the issue.

Questions surround many of the other artists who might be considered sure bets, however. Gotye should be a lock in multiple categories, but his viral song "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, wasn't submitted in the song of the year category because of a sample, eliminating one of its most viable prospects.

Others who might be considered possible top nominees like Drake and The Black Keys released their platinum-selling, hit-spawning albums late last year and they'll have to overcome short-term memory issues among voters.

Sean Garrett, a producer for artists like Usher and Beyonce with multiple Grammy nominations, said a lack of clear trends during the nominating period made it difficult to guess going into the show.

"It was sort of an iffy kind of year in my opinion," Garrett said in a phone interview. "I'm going to be honest: I think the politics kind of slowed the music down."

He expects pop stars like Jepsen, Bieber, Swift and Korean sensation PSY to take home nominations, but doesn't see an artist accumulating a high number of nominations. That could leave room for newer acts, including fun., one of his favorites.

"They have a very clever sound," Garrett said. "The lead singer (Nate Reuss) has an amazing, amazing voice. I feel like they just came with something that was a bit different. It was mainstream pop music and it had some edge to it. And there was great songwriting there."

Fun., with their anthemic hit "We Are Young," are among the night's performers, joining Maroon 5, Ne-Yo, Luke Bryan, The Who, Hunter Hayes and others.

"It just feels like we spent the last 12 years pulling back the arrow and this year we just let it go," fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff said. "This last year has been incredible and amazing and hard and I don't even know what it would have been like if we didn't have 10 or 12 years of experience because it still feels like we're learning everything for the first time."

The nominations show is being held outside Los Angeles for the first time in its five-year history. LL Cool J returns, co-hosting the show live on CBS at 10 p.m. EST from Bridgestone Arena with Swift.

It's the first official Grammy activity in Music City since 1973, when the late Johnny Cash kicked off the live broadcast. He'll figure into Wednesday night's as well when Dierks Bentley and The Band Perry pay tribute to the man in black.

"So we're going to do that as a tribute to Johnny, a tribute to Nashville, a tribute to country music, a tribute to being back here," longtime Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich said. "And I think it will be magical."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York State Police on Wednesday were looking for a woman who slipped $1,000 inside a Christmas card she gave to a trooper, saying that while he is grateful for her gift he is legally barred from accepting it. The unidentified woman approached Trooper Christopher Maniscalco on Sunday while he was investigating a complaint in the town of Guilderland, outside Albany. She told the trooper that she often saw him around, commended him on his good work, and wished him a Merry Christmas, as she handed him a holiday card, police said. ...

Steelers CB Ike Taylor out with ankle injury

(AP) ? There have been very few constants in Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin's six years on the job.

The sight of Ike Taylor in his No. 24 uniform has been one of them.

Until now.

The veteran cornerback will miss at least two weeks with a fractured right ankle, meaning his streak of playing in 135 consecutive games will end on Sunday when the Steelers (7-5) host reeling San Diego (4-8).

"You can say a lot of things about Ike, and a lot of positive things, but probably the thing that sticks out the most is his durability and availability," Tomlin said. "This guy hasn't missed practices, let alone football games, since I've been here."

The 32-year-old Taylor has spent the last seven-plus seasons serving as an anchor on one side of the field. It's not a coincidence Pittsburgh has ranked in the top 10 in total defense each year and is No. 1 overall and in passing yards allowed yet again.

Though Taylor doesn't need surgery, the Steelers will have to rely on second-year reserves Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown against San Diego and Dallas, both of which have two of the more physical receiving corps in the leagues.

It's a task, however, Allen and Brown appeared to be up to while playing extensively last week against Baltimore after Taylor went down. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco completed just 16 of 34 passes for 188 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the Steelers revived their playoff hopes following the franchise's first two-game losing streak in three years.

To keep it going Pittsburgh will now rely a pair of 2011 draft picks to ease the pain from Taylor's absence. Tomlin likened Allen and Brown to third-year wide receivers Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders. The duo were taken in the 2010 draft and have quickly evolved into key contributors.

Tomlin figures it's time for the two cornerbacks to do the same.

"They're both talented young guys who are continuing to improve and prove that the stage isn't too big for them," Tomlin said. "Obviously, we need them to answer the bell as we continue to push into a territory that we haven't been in."

While one familiar face will be out of the lineup, another one could return. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will practice this week with a chance to return since going down with a sprained right shoulder and a dislocated rib in a 16-13 overtime win over Kansas City on Nov. 12.

Roethlisberger threw on Monday, though Tomlin stressed that at the moment backup Charlie Batch is "our guy."

Batch, who turns 38 on Wednesday, passed for 276 yards and led the Steelers to a pair of late scoring drives in Baltimore. Tomlin, however, stressed the decision on Roethlisberger's availability rests solely on the quarterback's health, not Batch's ability to channel the fountain of youth.

"Ben is our quarterback and if he's capable of playing then we're going to play him," Tomlin said. "But we appreciate the efforts of Charlie and all the other men that step up when given an opportunity due to injury."

Roethlisberger said last week arm strength and pain have been major concerns during his rehab. He appears to have made progress on both fronts in the last week.

"Seven days does wonders for injuries," Tomlin said.

So does the prospect of playing significant games in December. Tomlin allowed the victory in Baltimore is among the most significant of the last two seasons, so much so he was in a rush to get to the locker room afterward, one of the reasons the postgame handshake between Tomlin and Ravens coach John Harbaugh appeared strained.

"It took special effort to secure that victory and when I noticed that guys were headed to the locker room I was in a hurry to get there," Tomlin said.

And Tomlin is in a hurry to get back to work, though he's not trying to read too much into similarities between the team's position now and the one it was in seven years ago, when the Steelers won their final four regular season games then added four playoff wins to capture their fifth Super Bowl.

"I do think our team has some unique characteristics that are kind of born out of unique circumstances or situations," he said. "Quite frankly, it's always 20-20 looking back at it. If we're able to put together a run and win necessary games and get some momentum, then you can say it was unique.

"If we don't, then you can say it was irrelevant."

___

NOTES: LB LaMarr Woodley will test his injured ankle this week and could play after missing the Ravens game ... WR Jerricho Cotchery's fractured ribs have healed enough that he has a shot to return against San Diego ... Tomlin said he's encouraged by the way S Troy Polamalu played against the Ravens in his first game in nearly two months and could see a heavier workload on Sunday.

(AP) ? The Egyptian president's Muslim Brotherhood has called on supporters to rally outside the presidential palace for a rival demonstration countering opponents of the Islamist leader.

Wednesday's rallying call sets up a potential clash between the two sides. About 300 opposition supporters are staging a sit-in outside the Itihadiya palace a day after tens of thousands surrounded the complex.

The opposition is seeking to build on momentum to press demands that President Mohammed Morsi rescind decrees giving him nearly unrestricted powers and shelve a disputed draft constitution.

The call for the rally has been posted on the official Facebook page of the Brotherhood's party, saying it's a bid to underscore Morsi's legitimacy as an elected leader.

Scots' favourite pub food given new lease of life by Martin Wishart ...

New research reveals Scotland?s favourite pub dishes

New research commissioned by Molson Coors has revealed Scots? favourite pub grub. Prawn cocktail, fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding emerged clear winners in the poll of 1,000 Scots. The Carling brewer then asked Michelin-starred chef Martin Wishart to give the dishes a modern twist, to include in his latest seasonal recipe book, which Molson Coors is making freely available to pubs across Scotland. The book also includes suggestions on which beers complement each of the dishes.

Scots? favourite pub meal:

  • Prawn Cocktail (the favoured starter of a quarter of Scots)
  • Fish and Chips (preferred by a third of those polled)
  • Sticky toffee pudding (opted for by a fifth)

Phil Whitehead, managing director of Molson Coors Scotland says:

?The research just goes to show that old favourites remain as popular as ever. When you go to a pub for a meal, what you want is comfort food, well cooked with fresh ingredients. Martin has done just that, with a modern twist. These fish and chips may not have salt ?n? sauce or curry to go with it but it is an example of the kind of dishes pubs can produce and that customers clearly crave.

Eating in a pub, the drink that accompanies food is as important as the dish itself. That is why we so pleased that Martin has helped pair each recipe with one of Molson Coors beers, which helps show off beer?s versatility and how well it accompanies food.?

The research clearly showed an appetite among Scots to visit the pub and enjoy a good meal whilst there, with over half indicating they often visit for food and a drink, compared to less than a quarter who opt solely for a beverage. The pub also proved to be a popular place for love struck Scots to meet, with nearly a quarter of those polled saying that they caught the eye of their partner over a bar or across a crowded dance floor.

Martin Wishart says of the menu:

?For those customers who crave food that complements their favourite drink, the dishes have been specifically crafted to provide this. For instance, the crispy batter on the salmon is a perfect partner to the light, gentle carbonation of Carling, giving customers an all round dining experience.

Most importantly for publicans, the dishes are fully costed, have decent margins but remain excellent value for customers.?

In addition to modern takes on Scots? favourite pub food, Martin has also written recipes for two addition starters, main courses and deserts, which publicans can download from the Molson Coors website. The full menu that Martin has created is:

Starters

  • Prawn cocktail ? Coors Light
  • Calamari with Dijon cream ? Singha
  • Roasted plum tomato soup ? Carling Winter Zest

Main course

  • Roast chicken with root vegetables ? Grolsch
  • Crispy Golden Scottish Salmon, Coley and Mussel Bites served with Creamy Mackerel and Potato Croquettes ? Carling
  • Grilled Sea Bass with Fennel Tomato and Basil Salad ? Cobra

Dessert

  • Ecclefechan tart ? Blue Moon
  • Sticky toffee pudding ? Doom Bar
  • Lemon cr?me brulee ? Corona

Martin Wishart has built his career on modernising traditional Scottish food. In 2011, he was voted AA?s Chefs Chef of the Year by his peers. Martin was also the first Edinburgh based chef to be awarded a coveted Michelin Star, at his eponymous restaurant in Leith, which was previously named the best place to eat in Scotland.

lijansharma: kudals: molina anvil: Reference and Education: Proper ...

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.
