Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours point to 6.3-inch octa-core handset

New Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have hit the web with the company?s third-generation smartphone-turn-tablet hybrid reportedly set to feature a whopping 6.3-inch screen and powerful eight-core processor.

Marking what would be a notable increase in screen size over the current Samsung Galaxy Note 2 device, the newly surface Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have suggested that the stylus toting hybrid device will be officially unveiled later this year with a 6.3-inch display, up from last year?s already oversized 5.5-inch offering.

Casting further speculation of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 specs sheet, news outlets from Samsung?s native South Korea have suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features list will benefit from the CES 2013 unveiled eight-core Exynos 5 Octa processor. Far from the first handset to be tipped as an eight-core convert, reports earlier this week suggested the as yet Samsung Galaxy S4 will also play host to the new octa-core innards.

Citing unnamed officials, news outlet Korea Times has reported that ?Samsung plans to use the Octa core processor in the upcoming 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 3, which will debut later this year.?

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumours
Still far from confirmation, a number of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumours have been doing the rounds in recent weeks, with the reportedly upcoming tablet-cum-smartphone hybrid repeatedly tipped to be on the receiving end of an increase in screen size.

Previously tipped to be heading for launch with a near 7-inch tablet screen in tow, reports last month also suggested the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 screen will line up at 6.3-inches in size as the company looks to stave off increased rivalry from the newly dubbed ?phablet? market.

Having ignited a trend with the strong selling first-generation Samsung Galaxy Note, the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will face competition from the likes of the CES 2013 unveiled 6.1-inch Huawei Mate and the heavily rumoured 5.5-inch LG Optimus G2.

With a concrete Samsung Galaxy Note 3 release date still far from official, it has been suggested that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launch event will be held at MWC 2013 next month with the handset to hit retailers shortly after.

Senate Minority Leaded Ed Murray uses demographics to show that state Senate doesn?t look like Washington

While debating which rules the Washington state Senate will operate under, Senate Minority Leader Ed Murray used some interesting statistics to demonstrate that the 49 members might not be a demographic match for the rest of the state.

Based on the financial reports lawmakers must file with the Public Disclosure Commission, Murray noted that 94 percent of the senators have household incomes above the state median income of $58,890.

The home ownership rate for senators is 98 percent while the rate statewide is 64 percent.Ed Murray

Some 35 percent of senators are over the age of 65. Statewide, the number is 13 percent.

While half the state is female, just 33 percent of the Senate members are female.

Only 6 percent of the Senate members are non-white (including people of Hispanic origin) while 30 percent of the state is non-white. In fact, there are no black members, no Hispanic members.

Among Senate members, 91 percent have bachelors degrees or higher. Of Washingtonians age 25 and older, just 31 percent have such degrees.

No senators live below the poverty level. Statewide, the poverty number is 13 percent.

Finally, the median value of the homes owned by members of the Senate is $332,700. The median value of all homes in Washington is $224,180.

Murray said he used the comparison to make the point that the rules they were debating don?t just impact the Senate but also the residents of the state.

?We should take a moment and remind ourselves who are the people of the state and who are we,? the Seattle Democrat said.

Suicide car bomber kills at least 27 Iraqi pilgrims

Hadi Mizban / AP

Victims of Thursday's car-bombing in Iraq were returned from the Shiite festival of Arbaeen, which is shown in Karbala.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET -- A car-bomb explosion tore through a crowd of Shiite pilgrims returning home Thursday from a religious commemoration, killing at least 27 and reinforcing fears of renewed sectarian violence, according to Iraqi officials.

The blast erupted late in the afternoon in the town of Musayyib, about 40 miles south of the Iraqi capital. It targeted worshipers returning from the Shiite holy city of Karbala following the climax of the religious commemoration known as Arbaeen.

Children were among the 20 people confirmed killed, according to a police official. At least 60 people were wounded.

The bomb went off in the middle of a gathering of pilgrims changing buses coming from Karbala on their way to other destinations in the country, according to police.

Wave of attacks kills more than 100 in Iraq

"The explosion shook the whole block and smashed the windows of my house," said teacher Ibrahim Mohammed, who lives nearby. "I ran to the scene of the explosion only to find charred bodies and burning cars. There were women screaming and searching for their missing children."

Ali Sabaar, a pilgrim who said he witnessed the explosion, also described a horrific scene.

"I was getting a sandwich when a very strong explosion rocked the place and the blast threw me away," he said. "When I regained my senses and stood up, I saw dozens of bodies. Many cars were set on fire. I just left the place and didn't even participate in the evacuation of the victims."

A deadly car bombing in Baghdad in December was part of a recent wave of violence in Iraq had killed at least 26 people across the country by late in the month. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

A hospital official confirmed the casualty toll. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information to reporters.

Thursday marked the height of Arbaeen, when hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims converged on Karbala to mark the passing of 40 days after the anniversary of the seventh century martyrdom of the revered Shiite saint Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Shiite pilgrims are one of the favorite targets for Sunni insurgents during Shiite religious events.

Bus blast kills more than 30 during Eid holiday

Iraqi authorities typically tighten security in Karbala and along routes used by pilgrims, but security forces acknowledge they are unable to prevent all attacks.

As in previous years, the pilgrims practiced the ritual of self-flagellation on the streets, hoisted Shiite religious flags on trees and lamp posts and served food from tents pitched on street corners.

Zaid Mohammed, a 21-year old student, said he walked to Karbala from a nearby city to show his deep respect for Imam Hussein.

"All the people came here to show their gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices made by Imam Hussein while fighting injustice," he said. "We have decided to confront all the security risks that we might face on our way to Karbala."

State television earlier Thursday aired video of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki walking among the pilgrims.

Arbaeen has been a frequent target for militants since the U.S.-led invasion that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein, who banned Shiite festivals.

At least 70 killed during religious festival

The latest violence followed nearly two week of protests against Maliki by thousands of people from the minority Sunni community in the western province of Anbar.

Report: 10 crushed to death at church event in Angola

By Reuters

Ten people were crushed to death and 120 injured in the Angolan capital Luanda as they tried to enter an overcrowded stadium for a vigil organized by a Pentecostal church, the state news agency Angop reported on Tuesday.

Angop cited an emergency services spokesman as saying the victims, including four children, were crushed at the gates of the Cidadela Desportiva stadium, where the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) organized a vigil on Monday night.

IURD is a Pentecostal Christian church created in 1977 in Brazil, where it has over 8 million followers, according to its own website. IURD says it is present in most countries of the world.

Ferner Batalha, IURD's deputy bishop for Angola, said the vigil had been overcrowded.

"Our expectation was to have 70,000 people, but that was surpassed by far," Angop cited him as saying.

Typical American without a landline: A 27-year old Latino living in Columbus, Ohio

Actors Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana have split up for a second time, apparently. Page Six says that the pair, who broke up last March only to get back together this fall, were supposed to spend New Year's Eve in Paris with Cooper's family, but Cooper ended up going it alone, while Saldana spent her evening in Miami with friends. Supposedly the couple couldn't make it work because of their busy schedules, with Cooper doing awards-blitz stuff for Silver Linings Playbook, and shooting a commercial of some sort in Prague, and Saldana doing Star Trek and a movie with Mila Kunis. ...

The Dark Side of New Year's Resolutions | Psychology Today

Around this time of year, everyone and their mother is blogging about how to start a New Year?s Resolution. Now these experts have lots of good advice (e.g., set concrete goals, monitor your goal daily, don?t adopt more than one goal at a time), but there is something they aren?t telling you. There is a rarely discussed dark side to setting resolutions and it is this?striving for goals makes you gullible (or should I say ?goalible?).

When people strive for a new goal?whether it?s to lose 10 pounds, stick to a budget, or cut back on their cursing?they must exert willpower or self-control to resist temptations and stay on the goal-directed path. The problem though is that self-control is a limited resource, meaning you only have so much gas in your tank. Use that gas up on your resolution, and you have less left over for the other aspects of their life. So far this may not sound so bad, but when we are low in self-control resources, we become vulnerable to all sorts of undesirable influences. Consider this: nearly every form of extreme social influence (i.e., brainwashing) first involves some ?wearing down? phase where the victim is subjected to exhausting interrogations and is prevented from resting or sleeping. This is the approach used in POW camps, but also in cults, fraternity and sorority hazings, and even police interrogations. In nearly every case where someone has confessed to a crime that they in fact didn?t commit, they were first subjected to long police interrogations designed to ?break their will? and soften them up. As one thought-reform victim described his experience, ?You are annihilated, exhausted, you can?t control yourself. . . . You accept anything he says? (Lifton, 1961, p. 23). The implication here is that anything that forces you to exert self-control or prevents you from resting to replenish your self-control makes you vulnerable to the persuasive influence of others. Fraternities for example often force their pledges to eat unsavory foods during their hazing as a ?wearing down? technique (Cialdini, 2001); the same procedure that psychologists use in the laboratory to deplete self-control resources (Baumeister et al., 1998). So when you exert self-control on your New Year?s resolution, you are making yourself vulnerable to the influence of advertisers, salespeople, and the like.

To test if self-control exertion does weaken our ability to resist persuasive messages, Dr. Edward Burkley (who just so happens to be my husband) conducted a series of studies. He first tested if people exert self-control when trying to resist persuasive arguments (Burkley, 2008). In one such study, freshman college students read an essay that argued to shorten their summer break to just one month. If you know anything about college students, you know they definitely don?t want their summer break to be cut by two-thirds, so clearly they were resistant to this persuasive message. But Burkley ratcheted up the resistance even more by telling half of the participants that the change would be occur in just two years and therefore would affect them personally. The other half read this change would occur in ten years so it would have no affect on their break. Not surprisingly, participants in the 2-year condition were more resistant to the persuasive message than those in the 10-year condition. Next, all the participants completed a task that required self-control to persist (e.g., unscrambling anagrams that were unsolvable). The results indicated that the students who were more resistant to the persuasive message (2-year condition) gave up quicker on the self-control task than those who were less resistant. They had used up their self-control resources trying to resist the persuasive message and so had less available for the second task.

Second, Burkley tested if people who are low in self-control resources are more easily persuaded. To accomplish this task, he had people exert self-control on a seemingly unrelated thought control task (i.e., write down your thoughts but don?t think of a white bear). Then he gave them a persuasive message to read. This time, the message argued that all senior students would have to pass a mandatory exam to graduate (something students are also very much against). For some of the students, the essay included only weak arguments for adopting the mandatory exam (e.g., my mom thinks it is a good idea). For others, the essay included strong arguments (e.g., the best schools in the country already have mandatory exams). Resisting the weak version of the message is easy and therefore should not require much self-control. But resisting the strong version is harder and should therefore result in self-control depletion. Finally, all the participants indicated their personal attitude toward mandatory exams. The results showed that when participants read the weak message, prior self-control exertion had little impact on their attitude. However, when participants read the strong message, they were more in favor of the exam if they had first exerted self-control on the prior task. In a sense, these students had been brainwashed to think that mandatory exams were a good thing and this was accomplished simply by having them exert willpower on an earlier task.

The results of these studies are pretty powerful. After exerting self-control for just a few minutes, people were left depleted and vulnerable to persuasive messages. Students were brainwashed to believe that shortening their summer of forcing them to complete a mandatory exam was a good idea. If five minutes of self-control exertion can have such radical effects, think about what going on a diet or trying to quit smoking could do!

So how do we protect ourselves? Do we just give up on New Year?s resolutions? Certainly not (though this may be one of the reasons we often do). Goals are a major cornerstone to living a happy and healthy life. We can?t just avoid them. But what we can do is be mindful of our self-control exertion so that we can protect ourselves against others? influences during this vulnerable state. If you are starting out this year with a resolution, you may want to avoid watching QVC, avoid the shopping malls, and avoid any friends or family who may be hitting you up for a loan. Realize you are in a very vulnerable place, especially during the first few days of your goal striving, and protect yourself accordingly. On the other hand, if someone else in your life is starting their New Year?s resolution, now may be the perfect time to ask your spouse for that back rub, your parents for that loan, or your boss for that raise!
